Graham Bond Organization - Live at Klooks Kleek (1964)

01- Wade in the water
02- Big boss man
03- Early in the morning
04- Person to person blues
05- Spainish blues
06- Introduction by Dick Jordan
07- The first time i mer the blues
08- Stormy monday
09- Train time
10- What'd i say
-------------------------------------------------
RECORDED: Live at Klook's Kleek Club, London in October 1964
PERSONNEL: Graham Bond (organ, alto-sax, vocal) Jack Bruce (bass guitar, harmonica, vocal) Dick Heckstall-Smith (tenor sax) Ginger Baker (drums)
INFO: What was it like to be sitting in a club in London during the 1960s with one of the top
R&B bands of the time playing on the stage in front of you?
This is probably about the nearest you can get with the Graham Bond Organisation
rocking Klooks Kleek. Former members of Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated,
the Graham Bond Organisation contained Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker who later made
up two-thirds of Cream. At the time, London was full of blues bands, many of which,
like the Graham Bond Organisation,
had developed from roots in the jazz clubs of the capital.

The album was recorded towards the end of 1964 in-between the release of the band's
two albums. Jack Bruce had left by the time the second album was available so
presumably it was not long after this gig.

The album opens with the powerful Wade in the Water.
This is a taste of what is to come later in the gig. Released as the b-side
to the second single Tammy, the instrumental Wade in the Water is far more
representative of the band. The track acts as a good introduction,
showcasing the different instruments. Listen out for the amazing bass guitar solo
in Big Boss Man. This sounds like a guitar solo but bear in mind that
Jack Bruce is playing bass.

Early in the Morning is introduced as a Ginger Baker song but,
like Wade in the Water it is a traditional song that has been arranged by the group
and again it is an instrumental. Person to Person Blues features Graham Bond on vocals.

The instrumentals continue with Spanish Blues.
Presumably this has a Moorish influence as the track sounds more Middle Eastern
than Spanish!

Train Time will be familiar to Cream fans. This is noted as a group composition
although Cream's BBC Sessions credits it to Jack Bruce.
The track features a superb harmonica performance by Bruce.
The final track is the Ray Charles standard What'd I Say.

Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac - The Early Years,

This documentary charts the course of the early years of Fleetwood Mac between 1967 and 1970.

Despite Greeny's objection to it, the early Fleetwood Mac was initially known as:

'Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac'

The early members of Fleetwood Mac were:

Peter Green, Guitar, Vocals;
Mick Fleetwood, Drums;
John McVie, Bass Guitar;
Jeremy Spencer, Guitar, Slide Guitar, Vocals;
Danny Kirwan, Guitar, Vocals.

For those viewers who know, appreciate and revere the early Fleetwood Mac as much as I do, you will be entirely familiar with the contents of this documentary. Enjoy!

However, whilst many viewers will appreciate the enormous talent and mainstream success (1975-87) of the later Fleetwood Mac (Mick Fleetwood, John and Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks), typically they will have little or no appreciation of the band's formation and early years (1967-70).

And so it is; a documentary of the early years of Fleetwood Mac, whose devotion to the blues music of America was so deeply felt and appreciated from the period between 1967 and 1970.

But their work didn't stop there. Songs like 'Oh Well', 'Man Of The World' and the very dark 'The Green Manalishi (With The Two-Prong Crown)' set new standards that would inspire others in the British Blues Rock genre and beyond.

Peter Green as a blues guitarist is unique. Whilst EC was delivering the most blistering rendition of Robert Johnson's 'Crossroads' with Cream, Greeny seemed to enjoy a more fugal and restrained style that was altogether as equally enjoyable and fresh.

A small British blues band, Black Cat Bones, supported Fleetwood Mac on several occasions, and it is no surprise to those familiar with their young guitarist, Paul Kossoff, that Peter Green would form an integral part in that young guitarist's development. Within a year, Koss would go on to shine so brightly in the band Free and later with his own band, Back Street Crawler.

I post this after an exhaustive search conducted over the past three years to try and secure additional copies of this material for my library. But, to no avail. I therefore hope that this body of work can be enjoyed by others, for whom the likelihood of ever viewing the content is now all but near impossible.

No copyright infringement is intended. Given that it appears commercially unavailable, I hope that it might find a home here for purely educational purposes. I've met many of the great guitarists since the 1960s, but I cannot think of one that wouldn't tip their hat in recognition of the great contribution Peter Green and Fleetwood Mac gave back when... "Those were the days!"

Jorma Kaukonen - guitar, vocals - bass
Paul Kantner - guitar, vocals
Guests:
Papa John Creach - violin
Will Scarlett - harmonica
Grace Slick - vocals

This is Hot Tuna live at The Fillmore, San Francisco, CA, USA, on the 4th March 1988. Hot Tuna are an American blues-rock band formed originally by bassist Jack Casady and guitarist Jorma Kaukonen as a spin-off of Jefferson Airplane. They are renowned for playing acoustic and electric versions of original and traditional blues songs.

There is a strong likelihood that this concert that bought Paul Kantner and Grace Slick back on the stage together helped the Jefferson Airplane reunion tour and record in 1989 to come about.

Regarding this period in both bands history wikipedia states - Hot Tuna was reformed again as an acoustic band in 1986 performing classic material, with Joey Balin joining on rhythm guitar until 1987. Kantner joined the band in 1987 and 1988 adding some old
Airplane songs to the set list. Grace Slick showed up on stage as well for one show at The Fillmore in March, 1988. The band continued into 1989 and Jorma and Jack joined the 1989 Jefferson Airplane reunion album and tour, performing acoustic Hot Tuna sets
in the middle of each show.

This is the second set that evening from the band and the acoustic musicianship is superb (as commented on by Grace Slick). The late (and incredible) Papa John Creach is also a joy to listen to on violin during the latter parts of the gig.

.
